Strong SRT 4800II

hi all
im fairly new to this so please be patient
im thinking of purchasing a Strong SRT 4800II decoder, 2.4m C band dish with a superjack 24" actuator also a 90cm ku band dish with motek positioner.Question 1 is this decoder any good for c and ku band because on there web site it says (suitable for most sats), Q2 can i drive a motek positioner and the superjack actuator from the stb for both dishes Q3 to veiw all of these fta channels do i need a cam, if so wich cam, as im still not sure what a cam is supposed to do, i have read alot off forums still not sure help would be appreciated

The only question I can answer is the last one. No cam or card needed for free to air.

Q2 the moteck on the ku dish will drive through you stb , but the superjack has its own remote and controller box to turn the 2.4 cband dish .

before u buy the 2.4 mesh ,if you can afford it go the 3.0> .
I too am in adelaide and have a 3.2 mesh a bit better than a 2.4 .
(and they say size doesnt matter... )

If you can get away with it get a 3 Meter mesh for C band in Adelaide. I have a 2.3M Mesh and it does the job but that little bit extra is good to get some of the channels that are weaker.

You will probably need a vbox to control the actuator on the C band dish unless the strong decoder has the appropriate outputs for the actuator. I haven't used that decoder before but some decoders won't let you use two motors powered by diseqc 1.2 (moteck and a vbox) so you might want to find out before you buy it.

the 4800ii is capable of running v-box and motek at same time,
i just had mine connected at a mates place to a 2.4 solid, a 1.8 solid, a 90cm and a 2.4 mesh w/jack ,and a 85cm ku on a motek using a comb of switches and disque all at the same time,havin a mate that is a sat installer helps.

with the new firmware no cam is needed to view some sats just the right keys are required , i think it now works like a ucas system.

if your going to get a cam [edit: PM this info!! This is a FTA forum There are plenty of other places to get info on piracy..here is not one of them!] is the way to go, but if you are only new to this game this full type of setup maybe a bit out of your depth.

what ever setup you get have fun its a great hobby.

before you do anything,,, Check that you have , the ***LOOK ANGLES*** for the satellites,, If you haven't got line of sight
to the birds, all the fancy gear in the world, won,t get you anything...
You will need clear line of sight to the North and West, Thats no trees, buildings, the higher satellites will be OK, providing
your not facing South, but the lower satellites asiasat 2 and Insat
or NSS can be problem in suburban areas..

And we won't talk about Council approval, or nosy neighbours. The first you can ignore, but the 2nd live next door.

i have a clear line of site north and west as im on top of a hill as for dish size is a 3m that much bigger tnan a 2.4

I make the difference between a 2.4 and a 3 meter dish to be about 600mm - that's about 2 feet ! Reports indicate no huge difference in physically handling a 3m dish but signal quality increase would definitely be worth the extra size. I want one too !

You're right,before I bought my mesh dish,I compare the signal difference between a 2.4 M. and a 3 M. (both same brand) off 2 of my mates dish.
I found 3 M. is a big difference,I'm happy with a 3M. would prefer a 3.7 or 4 m. but haven't got room.
That bit of extra mm. on the dish makes a lot of difference.
