Remote control

Can a decoder can still be operational w/o a remote control ?

I just experienced that my FTA receiver can no longer be managed by my remote control. I can still view TV programs manualy tru the buttons in front of the receiver. But the problem is I can no longer perform satellite scan since I have to enter the installation menu and enter the password.

Im using STARSAT sr-X1600D.

seeking for your help.

You could take the remote apart and (1) Clean the contacts on both the rubber pads and the main Printed Circuit Board with methylated spirits - or better - isopropyl alcohol ( swabs for medical use works well ) (2) check the solder connections on the small plastic-pack-variously-coloured resonator on the main PCB. These resonators mechanically fracture the lead(s) unless they are glued in place after soldering. These are common faults with most remote control units. Batteries and battery contacts are also common faults and sometimes the actual IR LED is faulty. They can usually be repaired. Good luck.

If you have one of those fancy digital cameras you can see the infra-red output on its display screen. I have a security camera in the driveway here and that sees the IR as well. Try this and you will see. When the remote stops working you can then see if any IR output is evident and you will be a step closer to determining whether the fault lies in the remote or in the receiver !

The IR port on a printer would be a reciever!!!
With your remocon, get someone to press buttons on the remote (pointing at you!!) while you look on the lcd screen of a digital camera!! Your eye cant see IR but the camera can.

You will have to position the remote control OUTPUT fairly close to the camera INPUT. So find the camera lens and the output LED on the remote and let them see each other ! The beam from a remote here ( Powtek) is fairly narrow but shows up easily when you get it aligned. Make sure you try a remote which DEFINITELY works ! p.s - not shouting - stressing the points !

So ,, Have you changed the batteries,,

If it still does not work, strip it down and throw all the bits into a bowl of hot soapy water,,,

Yes ,,Yes The purest's are screaming, won't do the thing any harm, But don,t wash the batteries.

Dry it of with a towel, and leave it out in the sun for a day,
reassemble it should be better then new..

You could also try cleaning the plastic covering the sencer on the receiver.

Basset , you mean I have to soak the the whole circuit board in the bowl ? or just the rubber key pads .

I got bothered checking the circuits since the IC they used are those like asphalt coating. I havent seen a 555 IC in it.

Chall62 yes we do experienced the same problem....with remotes.

Why not manufacture a receiver in which all its function can be performed at the front panel of the receiver ?

Why ? Why ? Why ?

Won't do it any harm at all, all the componants are solid. sealed,

Scientific Atlanta used to work via the front panel, no remote, and they where a pain... Most remotes thee days have something like 35 to 40 buttons on..
Normally when a remote falls over its power relared, ether dud battaries, bad contacts, or the girl friend needs the double A's
