Over to decoders.
Sure you don't want something that will blind scan? |

By "blind scan" you mean to search for a receivable frequency automatically ?

That doesn't bother me too much as I am entering freq's manually on my current machine. Main reason for update is to get something that will receive ntsc and pal. Have a hyundia hss-100c
(pal only) and the main channels I watch are supposed ntsc. Pas8 hallmark, bbc world, soundtrack channels, all in glorius black and white at the moment. .....Matt. |

I don't know about the new humaxes but the 5400z did a very bad job with NTSC out of the box so you might want to make sure it will do the job properly before you buy it.

Okay, this is something I've picked up with some limited experience and reading. If I'm wrong on any of these points, someone let me know, but this is how I understand it.
A modern multisync TV will not have a problem displaying NTSC in colour. TV's that are not multisync will only show a black and white picture. Some decoders like my MediaStar will convert standard NTSC3.58 to NTSC4.43 (some call this psuedo PAL) which will show a colour picture on a PAL only TV but the frame rate will stay at 30fps. This is fine to watch but you still can't record it on a PAL VCR. Decoders don't always show what sort of conversion is done (if any) in the specs so finding one may be tricky. It may be easier to get a TV that you know will display PAL as well as NTSC in colour. |

Most sat boxes these days with just CIs and no onboard encryption do Pal/NTSC especially the Asian ones.
Just look at the specs b4 u buy. Specs at humax say IR-ACE do PAL/NTSC ok. http://www.humax.co.kr/products/ir-ace.htm I had a play with a new box from Zinwell last week and that had onboard Irdeto and it dose Pal/NTSC. It will sell local for around the $299 I reckon. It also had DisEqC1.0 and 1.2. pdf info here It looks the same as the mediastar DVB-T box. The 5400 (no Z) does Pal/NTSC fine. If u flash the 5400z to TOH 3.1 it does PAL/NTSC OK. If I was going to get a cheap box I would prolly get something with a CI slot incase u ever want it in the future. More future proof than onboard encryption. U can now get Emtech200s for under $400 with a Cam so without should be less than $300. I reckon this is a better buy. tsd |

Thanks SLYDOG - you have answered a question I had about the Hummy - it has been pestering me for some time now!!!! Igues I'll have to patch it to TOH 3.1
Matt: You can buy this box from AUTOSAT (Sydney) for $250!! Ultra-sensitive for weak signals (have seen it in action) http://www.pbi-china.com/product/pro...s-5518-fta.htm |
