Such a hard question David!
We dont go into details of encryptions here on Vetrun, but if you want to sub to a pay provider then you will need a box with the ability to accept that providers card, and the access module/system for that card. As for a receiver? VK4 swears by th ID's coz they have a sensitive tuner, X swears by the blindscanners for feed hunting, Y swears by the ? because it has AC3 audio out, Z swears by the Dreambox because................. Get the idea? Its like buying a new PC that has a 486 processor speed, next day someone brings out a faster, bigger RED one!! And yours is a boat anchor.....But I bet it will still do what you intended it to when you bought it!! More reading, searching, take a look at the retailers such as our site sponsor, see what they're selling.

Thanks simmo!
Can you recommend a good FTA receiver to me. The receiver I'm using now is Dion DT329. I prefer a receiver that support automatic channel search coz there are more than 50 FTA channels on AsiaSat 3S. Is difficult for me to input freq of each channel manually. |

The new Fortec Star 5100 twin CI Ultra blind scanner would have to be one of the best on the market ATM.
Check the product reviews thread. These are so popular in fact that Jason at adigitalife cant get them into the country fast enuf. All basically sold b4 they get here!!! tsd |

If you want the best , go for the new dreambox 5620.
But thats today, tomorrow it could be something totaly differant. But like all things, it depends what you want to do with it, and what your expectations are, It also depends on your knowladge or experance Its a bit like buying a Porsche to do a Paper round, everyone knows it will do it, the trouble is, its a bit low to throw the papers over the fence.. |

While the Strong is a good receiver it is somewhat dated, and as you say the bugs have been ironed out, But only in the software,
The hardware is still the same, Bit like a Nokia, and don,t get me wrong I have a couple of Nokia's and would not part with them. But there technoligy has seen better days, What about very fast loading, 5 search modes, Blind scan, cardless encription, UCAS.. While the Strong will give you a type of UCAS with the right software, it will never be a modern receiver, And for practicely the same money you can get a Fortec-Star Lifetime, and you can learn with the receiver. |

I can be sure I am not buying a lemon with the strong. Your latest and greatest are untested. I am a different type of user to you. So my need are different too. I can't keep upgrading my receiver every few months, like some of you.

Buying a Strong is like going to a car yard and buying a left over new 1999 model Commodore when u could buy a 2004 one for less.
Or buying a New big screen TV that can't do digital 100MHz. I have been playing with the Lifetime Ultra and it very good. I can also tell u the Lifetime is very user friendly. When I plugged it in and selected Pas8 from the menu I had instant 92% sig quality and 83% sig strength without doing anything at all!! I then hit the standard scan and in about 1 minute I had all channels scanned into the box. Thats it finished ready to go. I then deleted them all in about 2 clicks and blind scanned them in again in less than 15 minutes. If thats not good value I dunno what is... tsd |

The features are noted. I might still change my mind between now and the time I get around to buying one. Thank you.
