I'm looking at starting a web site .
It could potentially have 1,000.000 registrations in the first month
It may have a lot less-Don't know ,got to suck it and see.
It certainly would get a lot of hits in the first month however

So my concern is the security of :-
1/ The idea -It would be easy to start a competitor
2/ The database. Easy to electronically copy and distribute.

Do you have any thoughts on that? I don't particularly want to set up and maintain the capacity myself .
If this ought be elsewhere I'm sure you will move it

As for the database, nobody should ever have access to copy and distribute it if the the server and the website coding (php etc...) is secure. MySQL databases are username and password protected to prevent unauthorized people dumping the database content to a backup file. If the website is well written only the information that you want people to access will be accessed.

As for the website idea, don't tell anyone about it unless you are sure their not going to rip off your idea.
