Hi all.

Im trying to update the software on my strong 4663x, but im not having much luck.

i have the strong software running, connected to the box with a usb-serial adapter (with a null modem cable)

Basicly i have followed through strongs steps, but when i turn the box on it's led display just chases back and forth, it is not starting to count up as it is documented in the instructions.

Any one have an idea??

Cheers.

I have tried several USB-to-Serial adaptors and they don't work with my radio programming software. They will run a serial mouse etc., but I reckon they lack some needed connections/wires for other uses.

Try using a 'real' serial port. I bought a serial PCI card for $12......

hahah well that was trying to work off a boot camped macbook, so pci cards really are not an option!

Anyway looks like i am going to have to go install windows on that pc i have lying around :(

Thanks for the quick reply ocean!

Or try an USB stick,if your box has a port.

If your box is currently working and you simply want to load a recent update then a USB flash as Gulliver indicated is the best.

If however you've stuffed it and the usual indication is the lines flashing across as you indicated, then a PC to decoder is your only fix.

I've stuffed mine many a time due to ONLY putting on a incompatible version. I was loading the 'P' patched versions. The problem is simply, overseas dont indicate a 4653x 4658x. I have 2 x 4658x's and I know the 4656x is compatible. I THINK !! that the 4653x is the same as a 4654x, but I could be wrong.

To be honest, I cant remember if it's a null modem or a straight through. I've used both on different decoders. (I have 12) One will work, the other just wont communicate. So either way you wont damage your box. I've thrown everything at the Strong and they are very robust software wise.

Yeah it has a usb port, and claims in the manual it can be upgraded by usb, its just i dont have a clue how to do it!

there is no mention anywhere.

Another member Colin 2905 has one and said he didnt think you could.

OK. You need to have the firmware file loaded to your Flashdrive. The firmware name will have an ext .stb
You cant load a zip, rar, bin etc. IT MUST BE .stb

Now simply go into menu. Down the bottom. Across on the right, you'll see 'transfer data' or something like that. You may need to enter a password to access. The pasword is 0 0 0 0
Now simply scroll down to the file you want. Click OK on remote and whammo, it'll start to load. It will say do not turn decoder off while the transfer is happening. It'll take about 3hrs if you do it right.

Nah, I'm only joking, about 15 seconds. It will reboot itself. You may need to go into the Dish Settings (within your menu) and change/check you LNB setting. I've had heaps of updates change my LNB from 11300 to 11475 or 11250. Basically if you go to a channel you had and have NO SIGNAL, them I'll bet this is the problem. Dont be scared. I've done it dones of times with no problems. If your loading an original file from Strong website, you wont have any problems whatsoever. As I said in my other post, it's the patched versions you have to be careful of. They work OK but only for the boxes their designed for.

I just noticed, you've got a 4663. I thought it was a 4653. There should be absolutely no difference in what I've said. You should be able to wing it from there.

Here's a direct link from the Strong website

As you can see at the website, the filename ends with .stb
You download this directly to your flashdrive.
The loader is there but only required if doing the transfer via PC.

In what context did I say that? (I've forgotten.)

So what's different about 1.07 w.r.t. 1.06? I haven't done mine yet.

Forget that, my fault, you never did, what you actually said was you just haven't tried it.
Soz haha ohh and it was in a p.m

From playing around i haven't noticed anything different what so ever, i use it only for fta so cant comment on card performance.

Haven't tried recording yet either

I wanted to get into other sections of the Strong firmware and was told I had to use firmware with the 'p' on the end for that to happen. Have you had any luck with loading that? Or is it not a good idea? Thanks for your advise.

I just bricked my 4663x by upgrading the firmware. First I tried the USB method, turned it into a brick after 15 seconds. Now I've got a null modem cable and different versions of the firmware, and still a brick. The loader on the PC tells me it has installed successfully, but when I flick the switch on the back, the front of the box lights up for a second then goes into brick mode, even the remote doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas? My patience is getting very limited with this box, only been trying for about 3 hours so far.

Do you have a back up copy of the original firmware?
If so, then re-install and get going from the start again.
If not troll the web for the orig f/w and upload.
Sorry I cant be of anymore help.
Mark.

Thanks for the reply Mark. Unfortunately I don't have the original firmware and I've googled my head off until I can't google any more. This is starting to get the better of me. Tried from 112p to 140p without luck. Can't find 1.03 anywhere.

I still have 1.06 and 1.07 on my file server, if they're of any use to you.

Thanks Colin. Got the files OK, unfortunately same problem :( There's something weird about this box. I noticed on the box it came in, mine has MyTV on the corner where other ones I've seen don't have that. And my front panel looks a bit different to other 4663's I've seen. I'm starting to think I've got a cheap imitation.

Sounds like it might be a grey import. Perhaps try the firmware intended for the "Middle East & Africa" version. I don't know what the difference is, but it doesn't sound like you can make things any worse.

Tried the Middle East and Africa version too, no luck. I'll ring Strong in the morning and see what they say.

Problem solved. Took it back and got a refund. Apparently I had a cheap Chinese import.
