Can anyone tell me if a Maxplus 2700 can do 16:9 or 4:3PS output?

Hmmm. Trying to sort out one for a fellow that lives well out of town that says that option is not in his menu.
Any ideas? What software version is yours running? Is there a difference between a 2700 and a 2700s which you seem to have?
Have you ever upgraded your software?

All maxplus versions have this it is a common feature, enter menu via remote scroll to "system settings" enter using ok via remote, scroll to A/V Output setting press ok on remote, scroll down to screen format change using left/ right arrow on remote from the centre ok button, choose 4:3, letter box, pan scan, 16:9, full screen, pillar-box which ever you would like, press exit on remote, on screen display will advise" do you want to save" press Yes using remote left arrow an then press OK, all done works a treat, as to frimware upgrades all the time, 2700s using version 13 Oct 2006.

Yeah, that's exactly how I stepped him through it over the phone
but he says that the format line is not there.
Can anyone think of any other scenario that would make that option unavailable in the menu? menu lock out?

Yeah I think so.
However they live about an hour away on the way to nowhere!
So it might have to wait until they come to town for supplies!
Thanks

If they may travel close to your area, an if you should have a maxplus 2700 you can upgrade via unit to unit 232port, or Pc to unit, PC to unit you'll need the comport uploader, an the version of firmware you wish to upgrade.
