I don't fully understand FEC but i know it stands for Flow Error Control.
I've seen that in Lyngsat.com its always mentioned after the Symbol Rate eg 2/3

But i've noticed that none of the menu functions in the Strong 4658x have FEC.
I'm not concerned by this.

I am just a bit curious if the FEC figure is of any value?

I have seen boxes with out it, they must just auto range for it such as Topfield 3000CiPro

Forward Error Correction !

The stream includes error correction bits, an FEC of 1/2 has half its bits as error correction, FEC of 7/8 has one in eight bits as error correction.

An FEC of 7/8 carries much more information for the same bandwidth as a stream with FEC of 1/2, but requires a much cleaner signal - as in ultimate signal-to-noise ratio. This is why it is much harder to successfully lock a stream with a low FEC of 7/8 or 5/6 compared to a stream with FEC of 2/3 or 1/2. The effect for you is that you need a bigger dish and/or more precise alignment.

FEC is relatively easy for a modern receiver to detect for itself, so most receivers now you find have FEC = AUTO and you can skip this bit in receiver setup.

Forward Error Correction !
....

ooops! I almost had it right. :o

Thanks for the explanation Ocean.
That was easily understood.
Good to know my receiver will take care of it.
