View Full Version : Problem with Fortecstar 5100 ultra
My Fortecstar 5100 ultra was working perfectly until this morning. When I noticed that all the lights from the front panel was off. I have checked all the wires and plug.
Now when I switched it on, its front panel lights comes for half a second or so then it goes off. After that it does not response at all.
Do any one have any Idea?

unplug from the mains, take the cover off and check all the power supply voltages with a multimeter.

It is likely some of the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply are tired.
This is quite common in such equipment, repair is usually simple and cheap.
I have opened the box but I don't know which capacitor is causing the problem. Is there any easy way to find out the problematic capacitor?
I also noticed that there is fuse near the power supply. Do you think it could be the fuse problem?

The problem will not be the fuse.
Take it to someone who knows what they are doing !
I had exactly the same problem with 2 5100's. Same capacitor both times. They must be faulty. The problem is fixed by replacing the capacitor. Its the largest one on the power supply. Anyone with some electronic repair skills should be able to do it. Ask where you bought it.

specifically which capacitor? 400v or 10v rating?

The 400V caps fail with less regularity - in my experience - in most SMPS.
I had thought it was the large 400v one. I didnt fix it myself because I dont have the technical skills or tools. I opened one up to see if it was apparent which one was replaced. Unfortunately not, it was a very tidy job. I could tell you where I had them fixed and you could ask them. But somehow I dont think they would be keen for me to advertise this. PM me and I will give you the details.

repaired 1 the other day which needed 2 1000uF caps. they were on the 5v line via a regulater to get 3v3. so if you have a selection of caps including 100uF 400v, 1000uF 10/16/25v &470uF 25v could repair most psu faults.
