Hi all.
I have a cheap sat decoder (Success brand) which for whatever reason has a scrolling picture. Basically it looks to be a vertical hold type of problem. Originally the other day when I plugged it in for the first time in a few months, it was working fine. I left it sitting around in standby mode, and just then when I tested it out, the scrolling problem was back again. It appears to happen on some channels, and the menus seem to be ok, but then everything starts scrolling.
I'm thinking perhaps it's a heat issue, although the top doesn't feel all that warm. I opened it up and blew out all the dust, not that there was any, and didn't find any components that looked burnt out.
Any ideas why this box is doing weird scrolling crap?
I've included a video so you know what I'm talking about.
Cheers, Drift
EDIT: I've also tried using a different TV, and mucking around the the PAL/NTSC options. Still no luck :(

Go into the menu's and change the setting from NTSC over to Pal G, or set the TV to "multi"

Yeah I tried that mate, didn't work :(
TV was on Auto, then I played around with PAL/NTSC stuff, didn't help at all.

What happens if you change the TV to normal PAL, and then set the receiver to PAL-G. have you tried adjusting the verticial hold
Supply the transponder // satellite details and I'll have a go at it.

In that video, I had the TV set to PAL, and the decoder set to PAL-G, yet it was scrolling. My TV doesn't have any vertical hold adjustments. Most new TVs don't have that.
Sat/TP details are irrelevant, it seems to happen on random sats and TPs

Anyone else have some ideas?

Have you tried the RF output and the AV?
Is the earth of the yellow AV lead good?
Is there a buzz or hum sound on the audio?
The big power supply cap is perhaps 68uF 450V is it healthy?

Its a $2 box...buy a new one??
Sorry mate, seen your msn thingies come up here but I have been very busy.
I can only suggest do the normal fault finding techniques that you already know. Then dump the box!

Ahhh havn't tried RF output, but I've tried AV & S-Vid with multiple cables, and it doesn't fix it.
Can't say I've noticed any hum on the audio.
I'll take a look at the cap on the psu tomorrow if I have time. I could hear a hum coming from something the other day, but that could've been some other STB in the stack.
I'd buy a new box if I had money, know any good cheap ones?. Don't think I'll dump it, it belongs to wingy :P
Like I said earlier, I think its a heat issue. It runs fine for a few hrs, but if I put it in standby and come back a day or two later, the vid is nuts.
I cracked out the dbox today, tried to get it running with my ku dish & diseqc switch. No luck though, that thing is too damn complicated for me!
Not to worry..

If its in a 'stack', the ambient temp could be way too high for it???
Try it out on its own?

It seeeeems that it was a heat issue after all. I've had it sitting on the floor in my room hooked up to the TV tuner card, and I've had no issues at all. Unless plugging it into the TV tuner card was the fix, hmmm.....
However, I've got another problem now. For whatever reason, the sat box loses signal. Although the signal level meter still shows about 70% which is normal, I have no quality. Some times it will be a few hours before I lose the quality, or sometimes just a few minutes. Switching off the box for a while doesn't always work, it eventually just fixes itself. I noticed that when this 'No Signal' box appeared, even though there was 70% signal, there was no green light on the motek. I'm think that perhaps something is dodgy with the diseqc switch or the motek.
Any thoughts?

Tuning may be drifting due to powersupply instability. motek light may be showing low LNB voltage. If it has been running hot for some time the electolytic capacitors in the powersupply would have been even hotter than normal and for a long time. May pay to replace. Open it and have a look for browned patches of PCB and swollen caps. Sometimes multimeters with the capacitance measuring ability can test them as ok when they are crook. So replace the ones the multimeter says are low in value by more than about 10% and then more if you have them. Replace with 105 degee low esr if you can.

Over heating of satellite receivers brings back memories of the early Panasat receivers, proudly christened ''Egg Poachers"
If that is the problem, easest way to prove it or fix it, is to remove the lid of the receiver, if the thing is sitting on carpet, and there are vents on the bottem of the box, pack the thing up of the carpet with a couple of small blocks of wood,
Years ago, when I was running a couple of pack mounts, all the receivers had there lids removed, I do know of people that have mounted a 12 volt computer fan in the back of the receiver
