Here's my sad story:
I am a proud owner of an unmodified Nokia 9200. Unfortunately this morning it refused to boot up.I checked the power supply and it seems OK. I tried to re-install DVB 2000 with nokia serial downloader and with the demo version of Transbox but no luck. The uploading from the PC to the Nokia of several versions of DVB 2000 proceeds flawlessly (no error messages). However, when I start it up, all I get is the bootloader B 2.00 uns flashing, INIT 1, INIT 2, and B 2.00uns again. If I turn it on and off, the same thing happens. I also tried to install the original Nokia sw FTA 2.3. More or less the same story. I get “NOKIA” appearing on the display and nothing else. I browsed the web looking for an answer but I could not find it. It looks like a bootloader problem but I guess it could also be the memory. I also tried to change the tuner but nothing happens. What should I do? Is it possible to erase all the infos stored in the memory?
Help from Nokia buffs browsing this forum greatly appreciated.

Yeah sounds bootloader problem

I had this type of problem with my Nokie when I tried changing the firmware with the SCSI. I tried another computer and cable and it finally loaded DVB2000 Beta6 with the latest version serial downloader.

bassett any ideas?

I had a problem once with my nokia when I loaded the wrong software onto it and it screwed up. It would just go through the init sections and then freeze. What I did was create a text file the with all ˙˙ in it repeated for the complete file and made it slightly larger than the memory of the box. eg. 1MB memory create a 1.3MB file with only ˙˙ in it repeated for the whole file. I uploaded this with the serial download program. Once this was done I uploaded a working version of DVB2000 and it fixed it. In basic terms it clears the memory of the box that uploading firmware doesn't always do.

Try this at your own risk. It worked for me. Just as a precaution make sure your bootloader is protected.

thank you vetrun, ocean (for your moral support) and slydog.
Vetrun: I will try your method. This may sound to you as a dumb question but Is there a quick way to create a 1.3 mb file with FF's?
How do I protect the bootloader?
AFAIK the bootloader cannot be re-written with serial downloader. am I missing something?

Firstly,, When you do a re-boot of the software bootloader, all and I mean ALL information of the preverse program is lost, Your starting with a clean slate..

What that means is every detail of DVB 2000 is gone.. You say that you tried to reload FTA 2.3. did you use a plain cable of a NUL cable,, For any download reboot you will need a NUL cable, and this is worth checking... While a normal cable will give all the apperances of program loading. Nothing is happening.

.DVB 2.3 [which I use] is not the original Nokia software, but simple another software program, one of many. and in my humble opinion, better then DVB for general use,

The original Nokia bootload, was slow and a complete pain in the arse, thats why distributers always load DVB 2000, and I always wonder why, they insist on loading such a complecated program..
Also,, most of these programs will not except any transponder loading, unless you load Asiasat 2 first...?????? When the program is loaded go into First time program, and up comes Asiasat 2, Bung in a frequance set the LNB to 5150, and let the thing churn away, even if you do not have a C-band dish, when its finished and tells you that it failed to load anything, then and only then will it except anything else, remember to return your LNB settings back to 11300 or Universial.

If the above does not work for you,, About the only thing I can think of is to contact garry Cratt, at Av-comm, Sydney, He is a wizard with the Nokia software,, BUT if it constantly refuses to load new software, I would suggest that the problem is in the
Hardware of the thing..

Hope that helps, and please keep us informed of the outcome, as this information helps everyone else, if they have a simmler problem.

Bassett:
yes the cable is the right one.
where do you get .DVB 2.3? I wouldn't mind trying it once my nokia is fixed (hopefully it will happen).
I had problems in the past installing versions of dvb 2k but I always managed to fix them by re-installing FTA 2.3 and then DVB 2K. Why would I need a pin for FTA 2.3? I am a bit confused about your last post. could you "please explain"?
I hope it is not the hardware but it is a possibility. If the FF fix suggested by Vetrun fails I will contact Avcomm.

UPDATE: Don't use FF in notepad use ˙˙

This translates to FF in a hex editor which was what I was remembering. Sorry about that. I have corrected my posts above.

I just used copy and paste into notepad. As the file gets larger you can copy and paste more of the file. Remember dont use the enter key or any other keystrokes in the file, Just ˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙ etc............

I had a look on my computer but I don't have the file I used anymore. :(

Your probably right about that software not being able to write to the bootloader. Theres a jumper switch somewhere inside the nokia where you can protect the bootloader from writing.

I think Bassett is right, it looks like the hardware is stuffed. I made a 1.5.mb file of nothingnes, loaded it into the nokia, download successful. Turned the thing on, b 2.00 uns flashing. loaded dvb2k. same story, nothing.
I'll try again but I think there's not much to do. Vetrun: I think the bootload protection in the Nokia is the X06 jumper. there's a good source of infos at http://homepages.enterprise.net/smalone/basics.html
thanks to everyone for replying to my thread, it is a bloody great forum.

I,m a bit confused with your last post,

had problems in the past installing versions of dvb 2k but I always managed to fix them by re-installing FTA 2.3 and then DVB 2K. [B]

Why do you reinstall two seperate programs to get one to load..
This could be your problem, The bootloader could be wrong for the program, I don,t have FTA 2.3 on my computer since it crashed the last time, I'll get "Viewer" to post the link, But then you say that you have it . I,m confused,  [B]

Why would I need a pin for FTA 2.3?

With FTA 2.3, when you switch your receiver off, If you do,
on start up, The LCD screen states , Nokia then FTA 2.3, then Pin
and a screen comes up, asking for the PIN number, add 1234
and it goes on to the last program number that you used before switching off.

Are you sure your using FTA 2.3, sounds like your trying to load something else, and that could be the problem...

Bassett,
you mentioned in your previous post that you run a software called .Dvb 2.3, which is not an original sw and that it is better than Dvb. what is it? did you mean FTA 2.3 ?

My Nokia is a 9200, the FTA version. It does not have a CAM and the serial port is open by default (no need to use BDM, change bootloader, etc). I bought it in 1999 in Europe and it came with the factory installed FTA 2.3. No need for a pin.

I didn't 't try to install two sw, and the Nokia didn't stop working due to the operator tinkering with it. It had the last version of uli's dvb for about a year. sometimes I edit the channels with dvb edit but that's about it. It just "died" on me overnight, perhaps of natural causes, don't know yet. It is very humid up here.

what I meant was that the uploading of DVB is not always flawless. Sometimes you get error messages. What I found was that a re-installation with serial download of the original sw ( in my case FTA 2.3) always fixed it.
I would turn on the nokia, and the machine would boot up with FTA 2.3. then I would turn off the Nokia, connect it to the laptop via serial port, run serial download and re-install (successfully) dvb 2000.

I hope I've explained myself better this time. English is not my first language.

P.S. If anyone would like to have a play with my seemingly dead Nokia is more than welcome to do so. I'll pay for return postage.

You could send it to satworld they are Nokia specialists.

If you do a Google search, type in "nokia FTA 2.3 Download" you will get the program. or type in the following link // click

http://www.satshop.com/download/ This will give you the program , in Zip file form, german // english script on this site..

With regard to a CAM,, If you remove the Plastic clear panel on the front of the receiver, it hinges from the top, you will find the
transport for the CAN, They use a FAT CAM, same as a Pace..

I don,t know about the capablities of Sat-World, when it comes to the inner workings of Nokia, They can load new software, but so can anyone else... Another Guru is Robin Colquarne [no doubt spelt wrong] in New Zealand, Craig can correct me with the spelling, and knows who I,m on about...;) ;)

Bassett:
I am aware that there is a cam slot. I do have FTA 2.3.
Thanks anyway.
I will keep the dead Nokia for spares and perhaps buy another one in a month or two. I have a feeling that 2004 will be a good year for cheap second hand receivers.
Have a good xmas.
