I just bought myself a Super California Magic Box III with 1 embedded Multicas slot. Just about to plug it in and have a play. Anyone else here have one of these receivers or had a play with one? Any good or bad points?

*Edit* I'm only interested in using the FTA side of this receiver.

Update on this box. Good points, nice software, easy to use. Bad point, the audio in the left channel is slightly distorted, sounds a bit like a blowfly in the left speaker. Not bad for its price but the audio problem needs fixing.

send it back, and get another, sounds like one of the 'cap's' on the audio output stage , has dried out... or it could just be a dry joint, if you reverse the speakers does it still sound yuck on the left channel ????

I bought one of these boxes off e-bay for my Grandfather to use with Selectv. Seems like a decent box for the price. Still awaiting the Selectv card however :(

Justin,

I notice you have a manhattan and a digicrystal sds01. I also have both of these, question about the digicrystal, do you have audio problems, i.e audio lagging picture? Also, I have heard these are the same internally as a Fortec Star lifetime ultra (which I also have), do you know if the software is upgradeable, and lastly, how do you get the emu to work? (provided you have the correct K's)

Cheers

I must change my sig, as I no longer have the Digicrystal unit. When I did have it I noted an A/V sync problem on couple of TPs off Optus B3, but that is the only problem, otherwise not a bad box. I actually sold it to cosatman on this list, so he may be more clued up about the added features of this box. You should PM him.

Cheers
Justin

loading non standard, or different manifacturer software, can be a gamble, In most cases, if it's wrong, it will refuse to load, or you might find that it needs a 'streight through cable' as opposed to a "null' cable. There are cases where it will render the receiver useless.. but there are a great many cases where it will be very successfull. Pansat to Fortec is one such case.

As to your other question, if you have pictures, it's working.
