lazer if you need straight a through cable NOT null modem cable. See dick smiths for one, theres a thread in the forum already about this somewhere. do a search

it needs to be female -female 9 pin straight through

For my boxes I bought 2 cables, a 1.8M nullmodem and a 4M straight through extension cable. I just join them both together for nullmodem so it's a long cable or just use the 4M for a straight through. Works fine :)

Another option is to buy 2 D9 Female to RJ45 Computer Adaptors (STOCK-CODE: PA0906 - $4.95 on Jaycar web site) from JayCar and wire them yourself. These come unassembled and have push in pins in the back of the D9 - no soldering. You can then just plug in a std cat 5 cable of any length in the back of it to run to you serial on u puter. This works real well if your puter is not close to your receiver. You can have several D9s wired up so one is straight through and the other is null modem.

You have 3 d9 connectors u wire 2 to work as straight through the 3rd wired as a null 2-3, 3-2 etc.

Just use ur multimeter to make sure u get the pins right here is another picture I found on the net. U just plug it in to the cat 5 internet cable and check your pin outs b4 u push them into the D9 plug. Only takes a few minutes.

so what ya saying is ya can get a D9 connector that is straight through and a D9 connector that is null/crossed. Using just ordinary cat5?

You wire them up yourself. The pins just push (no solder) into the back of the blank D9. So you can put what ever pin to where ever you want.

See the top pic it has a RJ45 plug on the back. See the bottom pic - the wires are not in the D9 yet. So u put one on each end of the cat 5 and then put the multimeter on each pin to work out which is which. The d9 is numbered so u can push in one pin into spot 1 and the put the multimeter on all the other pins at the other end till you find the live one.

Easy really :D

I will go get the camera and take a pic :D

Here is one done. I use an old bent paperclip from the multimeter into the D9 to work the pin out.

so the story goes,,,,get a standard D9 plug, use cat 5(looking at your pic it's a crossover cable??? not standard blue)

The standard plug is straight through? so you rewire it to null?

Or can I just get them off the shelf already prewired as straight through and as null. I busted my old multimeter and use it as a paperweight.

SO,,,,I hear you laugh.

straight through D9---->Cat 5----->D9 crossover =null???
straight through D9----->Cat5---->D9 straight through =straight through cable?

Am I on the right track? Do ya deal make me one? LOL

@ Yalickit

All pics aren't blurry...lol

Heres another pic for ya made real big so u can focus... :D

Plug in pins b4 open stubbie as once u push em in they dont come back out real good. As seen in the serial D9 on left all broke off... Also come in D25 etc.

It would be heaps cheaper buying cables from a PC store than dick smiths.

straight through D9---->Cat 5----->D9 crossover =null???
straight through D9----->Cat5---->D9 straight through =straight through cable?

Yep thats right.
Make the D9s up as you say above.

This is how I did one ages ago for me Nokia

Do one D9-RJ45 plug
2 Orange
3 Yellow
4 Red
5 White
6 black
7 green
8 brown
9 blue

Do the other
2 yellow
3 orange
4 black
5 white
6 red
7 brown
8 green
9 blue

This will now work as a null modem cable with std cat 5e cable (NOT crossover cat5 cable)

Do 2 the same as the top pin out if u want a plain serial cable (your second option) or make a cat 5e cross over cable for between the above 2 plugs. the end result is the same.

i found the cable man at the local computer swap meets to be the cheapest ,its seems to be cheaper than making them , i brought a 1.5m one for my fortec last week and paid $6 including a gender changer

The above is a bit more expensive but still less that $15 and is handy if your computer is round the corner and down the hall from the receiver and you dont want to have to shift it all the time.

This works fine with 10m or more of cat5e cable.

if the cable is not right then your gunna kill ya box. Stop and think before you do it.

Do you know what your doing here? Thecable looks right. You might have killed it before when you used the null modem cable. What software are you using? do you have the right STB name in GTRom Tools?

lazer

the box never used to do nothing when i used the null modem cable i have done this before on my topfiled so i have a pretty good idea on how to do it im using the software from the fortec site www.fortecstar.com from this site http://www.fortecstar.com/downloads/index.asp?products=65%2C1

im using the STB updater for it to update the firmware on it and i do choose from the list of models LIFETIME ULTRA as the model then load up the bin file then this happens box resets and then green lines scroll across the display then -51- on the display and on my computer it says failed ??

Thanks  :(

You would know then that fortec says DON'T USE NULL MODEM CABLE. Maybe you missed that part.

Lazer, dont worry about the STB name at first, browse for the bin file, then cut and paste the stb name out of the bin file name. Try that?

lazer
11-07-2004, 01:26 AM
ok thanks simmo will try that and see how i go hope it works
