Fortec star Lifetime does it require a straight through or null modem cable(9 pin) to connect to PC for editing software ive found that some are saying straight through and some twisted I asume thats a null modem.
Do the cables differ depending on the brand of receiver you are using I thought that all receviers required a null modem to connect with PC.
If i need to use a straight through cable will a standard M-F 9 Pin cable with a gender changer suffice. thanks gurus

Its straight thru to my knowledge adp, maybe pm BlackCrusader, he had problems with a bought one, and had to make one.....the book says pins 2 and 3 are crossed on one page, and straight thru on another!!!!

According to my manwell, it's a null modem cable if you want to go from one box to another. Pins 5 to 5, 3 to 2, 2 to 3.
But for PC to box it's a straight serial cable. Pins 2 to 2, 3 to 3, 5 to 5.
If you have a cable and are not sure what it is, test with a multimeter. See where pin 2 and 3 end up at the other end.
If you are going out to buy one, check it carefully, as it can be difficult to tell them apart becausse of poor labelling.

So i guess it depends on the make of receiver if you use a null modem or a straight thruu cable,
:added onto list female-female straight thruu cable....
I dunno bout dicky smiths here though u should have seem the looks when I asked for a null modem cable i ended up buying a null modem cable of the net.

Yep, give us your expert verdict oh humble winner,LOL. :) put it over in here http://www.vetrun.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1504
Btw, don't use a null modem, that's only for stb-stb. see the fortec site for specs.

For software downloads its a streight through connection,, BUT be very carefull, and be very sure of what your doing with software downloads, Over the years I,ve done more then a few, and have just converted a Fortec Lifetime into a door stop, Shit happens. Can,t cry about it. But I,m buggered if I now what went wrong. Now all i get is a little green light flashing at me,,,

you may be able to go from Rx to Rx with the null to fix it.

basset, that's not very good news. I wonder if anyone has a jtag around here?
what software were you trying to download, so the rest of us can avoid it :(
I can't actually get the firmware update program to work on my PC. The channel editor works just fine, but it refuses to upload the bin file to the fortec. Does their software only work with COM1? (I don't have a com1 available)
what did you select as the model when doing the upload?

scrappy if using lifetime ultra use Al7bar FTA Ultra as your name for download, or Al7bar CI+ Ultra for 5100. visit ucascity.com for more details. Their's a tut over their on the 5100.

Thats intesting scrappydoo,, When you download the software Zip program , you should get the "loader" I was trying to load 3:32, which I might add, has been used by other people, and it does Irdeto a bit quicker. What ever you use Com1 for, disconnect to do the download, It normally only takes 5 minutes.. Downloading software always carries a small amount of risk, who knows what was the problem, But I did try other software, and it simply refuses to except any sort of download.
Never considered an RX to RX Sly,,, Might be worth a go...If I can find it in the bin

Thanks Yalickit, the filename you specified there let me download the file to the unit. (also an interesting website). The tute indicated that you cut+paste the first part of the filename after the last path \. With the official firmware from fortecstar site this didn't seem to work, but typing in Al7bar FTA ultra as you suggested worked and started the download.
BUT - the new official 2.35 PAL firmware on the fortecstar website gave me nightrider lights. I reflashed with the 2.32 NTSC version and that loaded ok. I see there is a 2.37 PAL version on UCAScity. Has anyone tried this one yet?
I am not sure whether to play further through fear of losing my unit with comments from others, basset & simmo here. I quite like the fortecstar apart from the remote control, which is possibly the worst I have ever used. It seems to work only about 3 feet in front of the unit and pointing directly at the stb and has very bad autorepeat.

The 2:37 software will not be a lot of use in this Country, Its mainly for nagra use.
Try the 3:32, thats the converter software, I used. But just because it failed for me does not mean its no good.
Really at the end of the day 2:29 will do everything you want, except Dummy Me is never satified

Me too. I only have a ku band dish, so I can't even get anything those additional features might give you anyway.
Anyhow I persisted purely as an academic exercise, and have now got 2.38 working. I had to go from 2.29 to 2.32 then 2.35 to get 2.35 to load.
2.38 seems very new off the press dated 25th June 2004. The screen icons have changed a bit. (still completely unrecognisable as anything meaningfull)
Interestingly 2.35 from official fortecstar site no longer has the menu option of "whose name we dare not speak any longer".
2.37 seems to have a few bugs, which 2.38 has rectified particularly in screen editing of things.
of note, powervu has appeared as an option at the bottom of "that menu" although it's not selectable in 2.38. I can't see any other noticeable changes .
